I have used WD40 on my DD - but never on a vette.
A good solvent alternative would be kerosene.
Or - if you want to pay more - Bug and Tar remover (basically
kerosene in a can).
Another low impact solvent - Prepsol (Dupont brand name) painting prep solvent.
All of these will require a good rub with cleaner wax after.
