Default Steering Box Rebuild Question

When I rebuilt my front end last year I took my steering box off and cleaned it out and replaced the grease inside. While adjusting it on the bench I noticed to get the gears meshed correctly in the center they would be tight off center and if I meshed them correctly off center there would be some play in the middle. I take it that one of the gears has worn inside to cause this. What should I replace to fix this problem or is it better to send it off to have this done?
Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

There's no off-center spec. The gears are tapered so the gear lash is not measured. The lash is reduced to zero at the center position by putting a preload on the pitman shaft gear using the adjusting screw on the top of the gear housing. I don't see how that can produce an erroneous adjustment. When properly adjusted, there will be more lash off center than on center.

Gears usually last a LONG time unless someone has improperly adjusted them. I set them up on the bench using a 0-30 inch pound dial torque wrench. They should be free at each end but snug up in the center. Almost 4 turns from end to end. The torque range should be around 12-14 "/lbs through the center and drop down to around 3-7"/lbs off center. You also have to adjust the bearing preload first to between 3-4"/lbs-slightl drag but no binding. If they are loose in the center and you can't adjust them out they are worn. If you removed the woem nut be awear that it goes in ONE way in order to properly engage the pitman sector gear and adjust lash.
