Default Ignition lock

Hi All,
New Member. Problem bought 1974 Corvette, previous owner put in new ignition lock, key would not go into lock position. Dropped steering column and manually moved ignition switch rod up toward steering wheel while fiddling with lock. Was able to remove key. Reinserted key, turned key to start heard click no power to ignition. I moved rod up manually again, turned key while pushing on switch rod to the right, power, engine started. Seems to be something out alignment, any suggestions? Also is the upper steering shaft also refered to as the steering column lock rod on a T&T?
Thanks Major 74

There is a lower lever on the steering column that is connected directly to your transmission (either manual shift or automatic.) The manual transmission must be in REVERSE or the automatic transmission must be in PARK so that a cable from the transmission moves the lower lever to the full UP position. Only when the lever in full UP, is the ignition lock cylinder able to be rotated to the off lock position. For a more detailed review of this interlock system, please download the following:

http://www.corvettefaq.com/c3/StrgCo...tems27JL04.doc

Once you are sure that your lower lever is in the full UP position and you now feel that the ignition switch need adjusting, download the following:

There are many more papers and pictures that are available at Terry Rudy's websight: www.corvettefaq.com

Good luck and welcome to the forum,
Jim Shea
