Default Engine leveler questions....

I used an tilt/leveler for the first time this weekend to remove my engine. I don't think I could get it to work as intended. Here's a piscture of the chains they sent me with the leveler. The upper chain is what I've been using for years and as you can see is much thicker than the new shiney chains they sent with the leveler. I would not attempt to lift much with the chains they sent, plus they only sent two short chains.

Does anyone have a picture of a leveler/tilt setup that works successfully? I think I need two longer chains and attach the engine at four points, two in the front and two in the rear.

The chains attach to this particular leveler via a slip-slot on the leveler itself.

Here's a picture of the one I made. I used longer chains than what you got with yours

That's exactly what I think I need to do. Do you know the length of those chains? I'm thinking about 4-5 ft.

That looks like the same leveler I have.

I made that leveler from pictures and measurments from my engine. as for the length of the chains I have a bucket of chains that I use with my lift. just hooked up that setup an Sat to get the engine off the stand, if I remember right I counted 15 links either side of where the chain goes through the leveler.

13 links that is short! Mine came with about twice the links if I am not mistaken. I try to use a few links as possible and removing the carb and dist helps, the shorter the chain the lower your boom height will be which will make the lift more stable.

I use as short a chain as possible as well but I was lazy on Saturday ...............I Didn't want to pull the Dist just to get the engine out of the stand onto the storage stands on the floor

Steve

So since I bought mine does that make me really lazy?

Like that the one you made is a longer since the chains like to dig into the valve covers on the shorter one I bought.

No it makes me cheap I like to make things, both my lifts are home built as are my engine stands and storage stands. I find it relaxing (and a break from the cars) to design/build some tools to help. The leveler in the pictures was made from left over steel from something else and only took a couple hours to put together. I have a shock mount knocker tool ready to weld right now out of left overs

I used climbing webbing to pull my engine

You can tie the loops wherever you want and it doesn't scratch anything. You can buy it for about 0.25$ a foot and it's usually rated to 18 kN (about 4000 lbs).

Just make sure you tie the right knot - water knot or bowline
