Default 69 BB side exhaust

I've found a few pages before from the search button, but right now I have slow .... really slow internet and can't find them. The links I saved don't work anymore. I would like to know what everyone's used under their factory side exhaust as far as headers and mufflers or what not. thanks

I used the factory manifolds cast powder coated, factory heat riser block w/ guts taken out and welded up at the two pin points, factory side pipes w/ the factory covers 3 piece chrome black fins, if you do this their is a sleeve along w/ the donut that needs to be used at the manifold to side pipe connection to assure no leaks hope this helps!
keep em flags flying

So you either buy headers that will fit the sidepipes (Does Hedman make some? Not too many out there that work with sidepipes..) or, you fab an S-shaped pipe to bring your exhaust back from the headers to the sidepipe.

i got hedman full length side exhaust headers.. they fit excellent, but i cut off the lead pipes on the original mufflers and had some custom bent 2.5" tubing and welded the tubing into the allen's side exhaust muffler. they look and sound awesome. if anything they hang a bit lower than if they were hooked up to stock exhaust manifolds, but its hardly noticeable.

Last year at Roger's cruise in there was a guy in a nice orange 69 that had some great sounding but not loud chrome side pipes. These looked a little different than hookers. The front had three dummy tubes and one that hooked up to the exhaust manifold. He added some pieces of short pipes to the dummies so it wasn't noticable that they were dummies. The owner said he got them from.... are you ready? J.C.Whitney. He also said they cost around $200 .Check out the web site. these really impressed me for some inexpensive sidepipes.

Stock '69 exhaust here and it's loud.

Next step will be to try the C2 side exhaust insulators and covers. I heard you can get a 3 in pipe under there, where you can't on the '69 covers.

before, I had a reply from someone that said I think it was heddman's hooked up to their big block with I think it was allen's muffler under the stock side covers. I know someone had something that worked, and I just wanna find out what it was. I had sent myself a link to the page some time ago, but now it doesn't work. And I never bothered to write it down, cause I had the link...

Stainlessworks has stainless headers and factory sidepipe kit for Big Blocks that bolt right up to each other...Very expensive, but quality stuff. I think the headers alone are around $1200, and the mufflers were $770.

I know Hedman's won't work with my aluminum heads. Something about the difference in the shape of the ports. Don't know about iron heads though.

Headmans side headers are terrible! Crap quality, crap design.
Stahl makes a good header and a nice side pipe.

If you use the fiberglass stock style covers you can get 3.5" pipes under them, Or midyear covers would work well too.

For mufflers use Spiral turbo baffles or make your own with parts from summit or speedway for about 1/5 the cost.

Stock mufflers suck, don't even bother.

If you ARE tempted to use stock mufflers, might as well just use the stock manifolds cause you aint gettin any horsepower outta em.

also if you are tempted to use the headman side exhaust headder dont, use the stock manifold, it's better :-U

Anybody got any pics of these set-ups? Who has experience with the stahl headers and side pipes? Anyone running them?

my hedmans were always leaking at first..probably do to the thin flange. I changed gaskets about 3 times, and finally got it to stop with percy gaskets and ARP bolts, however; they still have some black coming out..but not much. Other than that, I think they are good quality, fit nice, and look good.

Headman side exhaust headers have a few major problems.
They are cheap and poorly designed.

Headdmen can make good headers,I've seen them, this however aint one of 'em

They use a very thin flange and 'o-ring' seals. These touted O-rings concentrate all the clamping force on a small area, crushing the gasket too much and warping the flange if care is not used.
(A good header has a thick flat flange )

The primaries are very small diameter. Even for a mild smallblock, too small.

The primaries are too short. Way too short, might as well use block huggers.
( longer primaries will scavange the exhaust gasses out of the clyinder better, which is why you buy headers )

The primaries are vastly different lengths. this makes it hard to tune the engine since some clyinders are running lean while others are rich, none are ever right.
( A good exhaust contributes much more to the clyinder filling than a good intake ( David Vizard ))

The two piece collector flange design makes it hard to get a good seal.
( good headers use a thick welded flange, but welding costs money )
