Has anybody ever heard of FHS Smokeless oil? Some very big claims for older rebuild needing engines. I need a rebuild on the 71, and was thinking I could at least keep cruising for the rest of the season, without the cloud following me at stop signs. Best time of year for the Corvette in CT coming up. would hate to put it away early.
thicker oil will not bypass the rings and valve stems as easily. In the old days we used to run a couple of cans of STP to thicken up the oil. I believe one of the major brands has a high mileage formula too.
Go for it. Better to be able to drive it for a few more months without embarrasment.
I've read that larger engines with flat tappet cams like thicker oil anyway. The modern 5w-30 oils are for the newer engines with roller tappets.

i don't understand how the oil can prevent being consumed unless it is very thick. I can believe that it doesn't produce smoke when burned in the combusion chamber.
Used this stuff a couple years ago in a DD to get it through inspection. I don't know how it works other than to say that it isn't thick. Poured just like any normal 10/30 - 10/40 oil. Perhaps even a little thinner.
I did note that while it eliminated the blue oil smoke coming out the exhaust, that the crankcase did go a quart low at about the same interval as with the regular oil. I can only speculate that it was still being "burnt", it just didn't produce blue smoke while doing so.
My mechanic friend laughed at me when I told him what I was going to try. Called it "snake oil". I'll even admit I thought I was throwing my money away. However I'm glad I tried it as it did allow me to pass inspection here in NJ where any smoke out of the exhaust is a reason for failure. FWIW.
If this stuff works on the very not cool smoke trail it`ll be worth more than what I paid for it. Soon as I get it in the crankcase I`ll post the results. The guy on the order line told me that it would not have the same results if the rings were cracked or compression was allready bad.
OK, I told you guys I would let you know how this stuff worked. I drained the oil and put on new filter. After adding the oil, started the vette up and lo and behold a few puffs than nothing. Ran the engine up to temp and took her out. Not a drop of smoke. I guess I just bought myself a few more months. Be good for the changing of the leaves.
