Gear Drive Install Question
Bought a new gear drive off Ebay. No markings. On the center idler (2 gears) the shafts that hold he gears on are equal length on one side. On the other side one shaft sticks out farther. Which faces forward or doesn't it matter?

Im not totally sure but by if I go by the pics I have seen in the parts catalogs it shows the longer side to be on the passenger side of the engine. Dont take my word solely though. Maybe someone can chime in and confirm. If im wrong then sorry.

The longer shaft goes to the engine. It will position the idler gear assy. You should have good alignment with the crank gear that way. The other thing you need is a cam button spacer. It goes in the center of the cam gear and can be either solid or rollerized. The outside surface of the button spacer will ride on the inside of the timing cover. The button spacer positions the cam so it does not walk forward.

Yes you can get it from Jegs or Summit but NO it in NOT optional. You need the button spacer or the cam gear will walk forward and rub on the timing cover. Get a rollerized one as opposed to the solid one as the roller style will not wear as much on the timing cover. Some people will weld a reinforcement plate on the inside of the cover but I never did.
There should be a thrust washer or torrington bearing as well for instalation behind the cam gear.
