Default How do I check the birdcage for rust??

I know this is a problem area on C3's, so what do I need to take off to inspect it for rust?? I'm working on a '77.

Kick panels, interior trim around the windshield for starters

also, I read a post a while back, put a clean white towel into both footwells. drive around a bit, slam the doors a few times, shake the steering wheel. Loose rust will show up on the towels. It does in mine anyway

Also, remove the inspection plates for the #3 body mounts and check their condition. Get a good flashlight and look under the dash to inspect for signs of rust (water steaks). Don't forget the floor pans, you can inspect those by pulling back the carpet. (especially around the floor pan drain holes.

I used to drive around with this brown dandruff sprinkling down! New top frame fitted now, fortunately no low down rust, well not on the winscreen frame anyway!

Default Rust above windshield

I have had so much rust fall down from the windshield frame the last couple of years that I can't believe the windshield stays in place. This is my next project.

Can someone tell me what the area the birdcage really is. My assumption is from the windshield pillars back to the rear window of a coupe. I would like to do an inspection of mine, but I don't want to remove a lot of unnessary hardware. I have had the left dash panel out a coule of times and I see some surface type rust, but no flaking areas. I have a 69 coupe and I'm just would like to verify the condition of the birdcage. Thanks
