Default timing mark on 78 L48

Where is the timing mark on a 78 L48? I couldn't find any sort of timing mark on the car except for possibly a sharp edge on the driver's side of the timing change cover. Is that it or am I (big suprize here) missing parts? Can someone e-mail me a photo (nitrusmr2@yahoo.com)

Did I metion that the previous owner of my '78 was so large he needed not one, but TWO seat belt extensions?

Have a look at your harmonic balancer which sits at the fron tof the engine connected to the crankshaft below the timing chain cover. There should be a line on it. Your timing chain cover should have a timing tab on it. The timing tab will have a zig-zag edge with number ranging from 8-4-0-4-8-12 or something like that. When the line on the harmonic balancer is at zero your #1 piston will be at top dead center.

Check this site out, lots of wicked info!

Click on the picture to zoom in. Notice the lines on the sides of the balancers.

Thanks, the line is there, but my timing tab is missing. I bought a $3 chrome one today, but an unsure of which bolts to use to attach it. Anyone have a pic of one installed?

Tilt-Tele wheel that was really really loose so he could move it quite a bit.
