I know that I must not be the only one....can anyone tell me what causes the strg wheel in my '74 to feel so stickey? Does anyone have a cure (other than replacement)?
I have the same problem with the steering wheel of a 78 GMC. And a friend of mine with a 73 Corvette had the same problem. It does not go away. Heat is the cause of the steering wheel getting stickey and once it starts it does not go away. My friend just wraped his in leather and it actually looks good.
I put the one from the GMC in the freezer for several days. -- the wife was not too pleased with that. -- And the steering wheel is still stickey. I also tried to clean it with Simple Green with no success.
My solution was to go to a leather wrapped 14" 4 spoke wheel. Have manual steering but the leather helps with the grip so the loss in diameter was not a big deal.
My 72 is the same. I ran into a guy at Carlisle last year that refinishes the wheels. About $125 if I recall. If you want to go that route, I'll see if I can find the contact info.
Any armor all or such on the interior? I am re-dying my interior and everything in the damn car was sticky from a previous owners use of it. I am using 3M general purpose adhesive remover to clean the parts... so far so good, hasn't removed any of the original paint, but you are taking a chance with it. Don't rub, wipe once and toss the towel in the trash. Try a hidden area first of course
My '82 oozes brown peanut butter looking adhesive from the areas where the spokes penetrate the rim of the wheel. I probably squeezed out a teaspoon or more of this stuff when I put on a leather wheel cover. Every so often I have to wipe off more of this stuff with a towel, nasty!
My 69 wheel does the same thing. When i bought the car, it has a huge build up of this sticky stuff. I took the wheel, cleaned the crap out of it, then got some rubbing compound. I rubbed the whole wheel out. It looked like brand new. Now a year later. I get in my car a few days ago and all of a sudden it is sticky again! Very frustrating.
