Default 1982 Speedometer Stop & Check Engine

I was driving along and my speedometer stopped working (reads 0 mph) and my check engine light went on shortly thereafter. Any ideas what I should check first? Also will going over 85mph break the speedometer? Thanks

You likely have a snapped speedometer cable or a stripped plastic driven gear in the transmission. The check engine light has come on because the ECM (computer) has detected that the trans is in gear, the engine rpm is off idle, and there is no speedometer signal coming into the ECM. Fixing the inoperative speedometer should turn off the check engine light.

Going over 85 will not break the speedometer, only your wallet should the gendarms see you.

yes steve is correct, the 82 has a VSS that works with an optical emitter and sensor on the back of the speedo. ONce the speedo stops the ECM won't get a VSS signal anymore and a code will be tripped.

Thanks guys, I just tested the upper cable with my drill and it is working fine. I removed the lower cable and found that the blue plastic tip going into the transducer broke off. I guess the transducer is bad.
What is the best place to source these components?
Thanks.

I think they are discontinued, easiest solution would be to get a non cruise speedo cable, however you will loose the cruise control.

I think remanufacture or rebuilt units are available, but not sure where. Someone else here had a line on them.

remanufactured cruise control -609-549 at www mamotorworks .com price $99.00 .what i did till I got the transducer ,was take apart the old transducer take the bad spring out [that may have been what put the cable in a bind ]make shure that everything now turns okay. change cable .reasemble .the cruise will not work but the light will be out and you will have speedo again .

You should be able to get a rebuilt unit at most any auto parts facility. I got one from wrenchhead.com a few years ago. Around $60.00 if I remember.

Found the parts I needed: Best prices were at napaonline.com and rockauto.com. Rockauto had the transducer for 46.00 after an 11.00 core return. The part was rebuilt by Cardone a very reputable operation. Thanks for the help guys. Have a nice weekend
