Default 1971 Corvette Lock

What is the lock on the rear of a 71 Corvette right above the Corvette letters? We picked a 71 up and we have no idea what this is for, nor do we have a key. Thanks!!

On my '72, it is the factory alarm. Maybe it was an option in '71?

You have the rare option trunk Vette.
It is for the factory alarm. It was an option in 71. Became standard in 72

That's the alarm key switch, the alarm horn is mounted in the drivers side rear wheel well. 73 was the last year I believe that had the alarm key was mounted on the rear, in 74 they mounted it on the drivers side front just above the "stingray" logo....

Default Alarm

Also...look in your jack storage compartment for more electrical goodies related to your alarm. You also have a switch under the hood and in each door jamb. The alarm swich appeared in the rear of the vette in 1970E with a Briggs & Stratton style push-button key alarm switch and was switched to a "key" style in 1970L.
