I am in the middle of doing this on my '71. You will have to take the entiire regulator assembly out of the door. Remove the power window motor and unwind the tension off of the spring. Be very careful when doing this job. It looks simple and it really is. However, it is also very dangerous. Check out stingray4me's web site. It gives you some good visuals and advice on removing and reinstalling the reg safely.
I recently did this on the passenger side of my '80. My spring had broken, so in-turn I had to install a new spring. I assume that your spring has broken also. I used stingray4me's web page and it really helped. The only problem I had (besides getting the damn glass out of the door to remove the regulator assembly) was installing the spring. I ended up standing on my regulator (I don't have a vise) and grabbing the inner part of the spring with a pair of vice-grips and slowly twisting the spring until it went into the slot on the regulator rivet. Do it nice and slow and it will work. Beware that there is a lot of tension in the spring. Good luck!
Thanks alot for the info...sounds like I have to disassemble the complete door. Where you have already done this do you have any pointers on that? I can't even see where the inner metal piece/cover seperates.

Well Doug, I don't know what the differences are between the 74 and the 80 but to remove the door panels, I had to remove the arm rest (three screws), the door handle cover (1 screw), side mirror adjustment (2 screws + a recessed allen head screw in the adjustment lever), 2 screws in the lower part of the panel below the arm rest (one up front and one in the back), and one up in the upper rear corner of the door.
Removing the panel will give you access to the inner workings of the door. I had to pull the window out (that was a bitch) to release the parts that raise the window. The regulator was bolted on with 3 nuts. My regulator came out through a whole in the inner door section. Reverse the procedure to put everything back. I did not replace the rivet on my regulator. Mine was in good shape. Don't know exactly how to remove it if you have to do that. Good Luck.
