Default Cam question

After running my newly rebuilt engine for a whopping 400 miles my cam seems to be wiped and I need a new one. BTW: Comp XE268h

How do I determine which one of the 50 billion different types of cams to choose?

468/Original intake/KB 9.5:1 pistons/Q-Jet/Original Iron heads with enlarged Intake valves/used for fun driving no serious competion and I'd like it to idle.

Mick

The cam is the engine's mechanical program. You need to say more about what you want like how did you like the cam you had, do you want more upper power, etc. & what's exhaust?
I see you have a 4spd.

I didn't like anything about the previous cam because the car never quite ran right with it and now its scrap after only 400 miles.

My exhaust uses std manifolds w/2.5 inch chambered exhaust. I'd like good low to mid range torque don't care about hi-RPM HP #'s since I'll never go there. Just fun driving with the occasional trip to the track/drag and road course.

XE-268 is 224 230 duration @ .050 110LS. Sounds like you would like something like Comps 270H which is 224 224 110LS & not more than the 280H which is 230 230 110LS. More could be run, but that's not what you want.

Ganey,
How can I tell what caused the failure of the current cam? #2 exhaust pushrod travels almost 0 inches. Haven't torn it down any further?

Not enough info., valve could have been stuck & may have bent the pushrod, etc.

probably a result of poor hardening after grinidng combined with a (for a hydr. flat tappet) aggressive love pattern...

Even though I had 2 XE's wipe, 262 after 6 years and 268 after a week I still love the way the XE262 performed during it's lifespan. For a small cam in a 383 it was an overacheiver IMHO. My car ran 8.0's all day long and a best of 7.99 (12.5 quarter) in the eighth NA and 7.143 (11.3 quarter) with a 125 shot. That's with a Q-Jet and a 12" 2000 stall converter. Unfortunately I had my motor out twice in the last month messing with those XE's. The last time I installed an ISKY270/280 Mega cam and so far all seems OK. The car "feels" like it can equal or exceed the previous performance. I'll find out for sure later this year.
