What is the best way to record sound files that can then be posted on these pages? I once used a small tape recorder and was very disappointed in with the results. I see some folks have video with what I consider decent sound and others that leave something lacking.
I'm thinking of doing in-car (up through the gears) and drive-by recordings and any help will probably save me a great deal of experimentation! Thanks,
If you're doing an in car video, it's good to have a mic with a wind-screen or a mic that's good at reducing sound. Another option is to stick the mic somewhere up in the dash where you can get engine noise but not wind buffeting. Video cameras have pretty good sound, but probably the best option would be some electronic device that records at 44Khz or better, 16-bit stereo.
Pacin'California's right, keep it out of the wind if it's in the car, or if you're doing a driveby and there's a breeze (in fact, in that case just wait for a calm day). Most MiniDisk players are also recorders and offer a compact, high quality recording in a very compact device. An alternative would be one of the newer digital voice recorders (look like a mini-tape recorder, but digital). Either way, an external mic plugged into it would give the best quality sound, the higher quality mike the better. The trouble most people run into when recording sounds, especially something unpredicatlbe and loud (like a Vette) is that it's hard to get the various levels set right on all the equipment. Often times what would otherwise be poor quality sound can be rescued by adjusting the levels and other things with some audio software once it's in your computer.
Hmm... that may have been way too much info. Email me if you need more

Steve,
Speaking of car videos, would you happen to have saved the 2 vids you did of my Z28? They were supposed to be saved prior to doing a complete wipe of our hard drive due to virus probs but somebody (hmmmmm I wonder who???) forgot to save them. If you have em would you PLEASE email em to me???
