Default Water Pump

How can I tell if I have a long or short water pump (what is short?) ?? I'm not running the metal fan so does it make any difference in what pump is purchased? Will the stock alternator brackets fit either long or short pumps

I don't think the belts will line up with crankshaft pulley grooves if you use a long pump.

I think that 1972 was the first year for the Corvette water pump.

The small block Chevrolet engine used one of 3 water pumps over the years. They are referred to as short, Corvette, and long. The short and long pumps used a 5/8th inch diameter pilot shaft at the fan attachment. The Corvette pump used a ¾ inch diameter pilot shaft to mate to the fan. Measuring from the mating surface to the block to the point where the fan attaches the pumps measure;

Short – 5 5/8ths

Corvette – 5 13/16ths

Long – 6 15/16ths

So no your pulleys will not line up if you use a short or long pump.

The GM part number for an aluminum high volume Corvette pump is part number 14011012. They are still available from GM.

Quick reply - thanks!!...but I left out "key" info. The engine is a 74 big block. Does anyone have the measurements for those pumps
