Default 1972 Fan Shroud Problems

Does anyone have any suggestions for installing a 72 plastic shroud in a 350 w/AC car. It wont clear the space between the upper a-arms and the radiator. I took the radiator out and now the radiator wont slide into the space between the shroud and the core support. I also tried moving the sway bar and coming in from underneith. The only thing I havn't tried is unbolting the core support from the inner fenders and leaning it forward to try and create more space, but this seems like a pretty big thing to have to do just to get shroud in. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

HEHEEH.....welcome to early shark shrouds....easiest thing to do is cut the thing side-side and the join it with a couple of metal pieces on each side....

that's what I did.....

either that or remove 6 bolts from the sides, and loosen the two large bolts on support bottom....

Assuming you don't want to cut the shroud, the easiest way I've found is to raise the lower a-arm with a floor jack and to remove the 2 bolts that hold the upper a-arm to the frame.Swing the a-arm out of the way and the shroud will be able to slip in there. Watch your fingers!!

Another way I've done it is to lower the whole thing as an assembly ( support, radiator, and shroud. But this isn't really necessary.

Thanks Guys,
I was able to get it in by taking the core sup side bolts loose and loosing the bottom bolts and rocking it forward. It was tight, but I was able to put the shroud in first then slide the radiator in.

That's the best way to do it, remove the two upper bolts on the bracket and loosen the bottom two bolts, then push everything forward, carefull not to damage the condensor in front of the radiator. I know of others that have removed the headlight actuaters to get more room also, lots of work, the engine was easier to remove!

Jake:

I had exactly the same problem on my '69 350 w/AC. I ended up doing exactly the same - removing the core support bolts inside the fender wells and tilting it forward.

HOWEVER - and if you can't answer this maybe someone else can. One of my AC hoses is routed into the wheel well and then back out to the condenser. I would say it was 8-10 inches of hose inside the wheel well. There was a 3-sided piece of fiberglass channel glued (bonded) over the hose inside the wheel well. Unfortunately, whoever placed it there covered up the top bolt on the core support. I had to cut into it to get a socket on the bolt.

My question is - is this a factory AC install or was this a bubba modification????

I'm pretty sure that was factory installed that way. My '72 has the same 3 sided channel, but it is on the engine side, not in the wheel well, but I think the factory did change this.
