Default Need engine analyzer to work with HEI.

Need to get an engine analyzer to get the proper RPM's with my HEI distributer so I can set the timming advance correctly. Will any new engine analyzer work with both HEI and points style distributers or do I need something special for HEI? Specs on the ones I looked at like SEARS, etc really don't mention HEI.

Any recomendations???

Thanks! Greg

Are you talking about a hand-held tach? If so, yes, they will work with HEI if they work with points.

I use a timing light and a separate tachometer. Some timing lights have tachometers built in but I went the less expensive option. I have used two different brands of timing lights that have the adjustable advance **** and found neither one was accurate. You may want to just put some timing tape on your harmonic balancer.

Get Lars timimg paper from www.corvettefaq.com . Stock timing sucks. I set mine to 36 total mechanical all in by 2500 rpm. I think it runs about 18-20 at idle but how often do I drive at idle : NEVER.

If you are going to play with your timing above about 2,000 RPM or so you will probably have to hunt around a little for a tach. Most I looked at only went to about 2,000 rpm. I eventually found what I needed at Sears though I had to return it because it wouldn't work with my new MSD distributor.

Yes I have Lars timing paper and I need a hand held tach. I have a timing light with an adjustable advance ****. I want to check the total mechanical advance to 3000 rpm and check the advance curve from idle to 3000 rpm.

Thanks for the input! Greg
