The highest speed on my heater / A/C blower does not work. I assumed it was the relay so I replaced it. That didn't work so I got out the volt meter.
On the high current (switched) side of the relay neiher of the wires have any voltage on them. One should be 12, correct? The wires are purple and brown (or maybe orange - it's faded). Any idea which one is supposed to be normally hot? Where does it go?
On the input (control) side of the relay I'm only getting 6 volts - is that right? Its enough to activate this relay so it's not a big deal anyway, just wondering why it's so low.
got me....it's rainy here today so i plan on changing the heat and a/c unit control unit out today. i bought a new one. i will check the wires for voltage and let you know what i find.
im not sure what year your car is but on the early years(mine is a 73) there is a fuse located behind the washer bottle that is used for the high speed of the fan ,,if its blown-----no high speed-i would try that first(i think it is a orange wire---carl a
An in-line fuse feeds the high speed blower. It is in the Orange wire running along the drivers inner fender and ends at the horn relay. Chevrolets blow this fuse regularly.
That would explain no voltage at the relay. I'll check it out.
The fuse was fine but the contacts were dirty. I clean them up and now I have voltage at the relay - but still no high speed. I guess 6 volts on the control side isn't good enough... Maybe I need a new fan control switch?
