Default 71LS5 Cooling System Capacity

This is about a 1971 LS5 (454 ci) cooling system.
The owner manual says the capacity is 23 qts.
I have flushed the system several times, through the lowest point I could find: The fitting just below the lower connection point of the radiator (bottom right).
The most I get out of the system, and therefore the most I could get back into it was approximatley 3 gallons (12 qts. |headscratch|
Any idea about this ? Any experience with a similar engine ?

Athanase,
I looked up my 1974 Owner's manual and it says 24 US quarts for the big block which is about 25 litres. That seems an awfully large amount of coolant. They MUST mean if the engine block is bone dry and you completely fill a DRY engine block as well as the radiator and about half of the overflow reservoir. I just refitted the radiator to my car and it took about 6 litres of water to fill the radiator. The rest must be in the engine and hoses.

I hope this helps.

Regards from Down Under

Yup, a bone dry LS-anything has a total coolant capacity of between 23 and 24 quarts. It takes 3 gallons of antifreeze to make a 50/50 mix. It's a biiigggggg engine that generates a lot of heat to dissapate.

Unless you pull the drain plugs at the very bottom of the cylinder block on both sides, however, you can't drain out all of the coolant. Coolant stays in the block up to the level of the water pump. Which means you can only drain about half of it through the radiator.
