I want to have a better stereo in my '81 but want to leave the dash completely original.
I was thinking of having a dedicated box made to go in the back that would contain the head unit, maybe an amp, speakers and maybe a sub.
I am sure that I have seen some pictures of similar ideas on here. If anyone has any pitures or ideas please post them.
I was thinking of controlling the head unit with a remote.
I went wth the Custom Auto sound head unit that controls a 10 disk kenwood cd changer. It is tight but fits right in the console in the origional holes. Got a pair of 10" sub boxes for a puck-um up truck and mounted the amp and CD Changer where the Jack goes. All bolt on not a hole drilled in the car.
Now I can thump like a ricer :-). As soon as I get my 19' wing and my underbody glow stick kit and a big azz stainless exhaust system I will be cool too!!!!
Don't want too much bass, just enough to give some decent low down response. I really would like to have the complete setup in the rear, so that it is removable and leaves the car completely stock.
I'm sure a few people have done the same thing here and posted in the past, used the search but couldn't see what I was looking for.

Don't forget to slam your car and throw on some decals...
I have a Pioneer in dash stereo, running to equalizer in jack compartment, to a small two channel amp behind the passenger seat. I have a fitted box in the back with two 6x9s Infinities in there.
It looks real stock with everything out of site and the box is carpeted the same color as the interior. The EQ made a world of difference, the simple treble/bass adjustment on the unit just doesn't cut it.
Oh yeah, also have a 12 cd changer in the jack compartment too.

I installed a Sony XPlod cd receiver in my 81. Yes I had to cut the gauge bezel but it was worth it. The speakers I replaced with Boston Acoustic front and rear. They fit in the stock location and sound great.
