Default Gutting Cats....

Guys, how does one gut a catalytic converter...lets say of the 81' year variaty...have heard several ppl do this. Is there any other steps that need to be done to the car once this is done..ie "check engine" light problems..etc. Any info would be greatly appreciated..thanks Joe!

1) Take off the cat

2) Stand cat on end and hammer through the material with a pipe.

3) Break up all the pieces and make sure they are out. Once you initially break them up, they come out rather easily.

4) Put it back on and enjoy!

5) BTW, I have an '82 and have had no problem with the check engine light.

BTW you did not hear this from me.

Can't say myself but have friend that did this

What kind of performance will you see from this? Reduced back pressure, some SOTP power increase. Have not dynoed to give you exact increase. Some say 15-25 hp.

Does it make it increase sound? Yes, some. I think it sounds better. Not obnoxious.

And im assuming that it won’t pass SMOG right? No, it won't pass smog check.

I cut the cat out of my 1980 at the same time I installed dynomax turbo mufflers - first I had the shop install the mufflers and I started the car to see how loud it was - then I had them remove the cat all together and I really did not find it any louder ? To me the Cat is just dead weight and is restrictive anyways -

First, you have to catch the cat. I use a rifle, but traps work extremely well also. Then, make an incision from the neck to the a-hole. Reach in there and pull everything out. Don't be squeamish, just reach in and rip it all out! Now, you have just successfully gutted your cat!

I have the TEST PIPE (bought new on ebay) which is a straight pipe with fittings on each end that are identical to the old Cat.

The sound is significantly louder when both idleing and on the pedal. and no issue with cpu performance.

I do still have the air pump hooked up, but the down tube is open to air on the end instead of going into the cat.
