Default Painting interior parts ?

Going to be restoring a 1980 with black interior , any advise on specific paints or dye's that have the best durability. Every company seems to sell a different brand and I am looking for forum experience with some of those different brands . Is using the primer on the parts also recommended ? Thanx

Default Painting interior parts

Bams-- The interior paints in the Corvette retoration catologs are the way to go.......the matchs are excellent and the paint is very forgiving ...meaning its very hard to mess up. Do not use primer. Simply clean any dirt off of the part, wipe it with a laquer thinner and then paint.

The manufacturer of the paints that you get out of the catologs is located a few miles away and the owner is a friend ....I simply followed his instructions and got perfect results......

PS The above instructions are also on the paint cans.......

SEM is one of the best. If your local paint suppier does not have it in stock they can usually get it in a day or two.

The posts regarding the corvette suppliers is accurate but your interior is black like my 70 and the SEM is excellent and you will save money versus the catalogs. My local guy sells it to me for 10 bucks a can. All of their products are excellent. Make sure to use the adhesion promoter when painting hard plastic pieces. Spray light coats so you do not lose any of the moulded details in your pieces. To put back the silver/chrome outlines on your pieces, gel pens work great! They take a while to dry on the non-porous plastic so let them sit overnight so they do not smear.

Have fun!

I started by replacing my carpet and painting a few pieces and 9 months later I am finally completing a total interior restoration!

Does SEM offer the factory colors like I have '78 Oyster? Corvette America has this color.

Since my interior is black I never asked the question.

Just do a google search for the SEM website. All their products are shown.

If you talk to SEM they can tell you the color mix for your car and year.

I did the same with one exception. After you paint run over the chrome pieces lightly with a razorblade. It scrapes the fresh paint off and exposes the chrome. Looks like new from the factory!

The key is to scrub the plastic really good to get out all the dirt. Use comet and a nail brush...rinse well and let dry. The comet gives the plastic a little bit of tooth so the products stick better. Also use the adhesion promoter such as Bulldog available at auto paint stores. Primer or not, use light coats to retain details.

Bams....I will agree with fastback01, he helped me paint the interior of my 79 and it looks brand new (Oyster White) . The trick is to spray a coat lightly, let it dry and try it again if needed. You should not need anymore than two coats at most.
Good luck

I also have black interior in my car and I restored most of the interior this past summer. I used Krylon Semi-Flat black spray paint on the plastic components (kick panels, brake console, rear quarter panels, etc.) and the color match was fine. Personally, I don't see the need to buy a $10 can of fancy spray paint for black interior.

carupano, which brand did you use for your White interior? I have used Corvette America and was happy with it.

Default interior

Hi Guys,
Thanks for adding me, Im the original owner of a 1974 orange corvette and am about to do most of the interior myself. My question is......
With all the paints, adhesives, a lot of patience, your time and other items needed to paint the interior . Is it worth it? Is it more time effective to buy a gallon of the correct color you want and just bring the parts to a body shop and have them paint it. the body shop has everything they need but the correct paint so I figure buy the paint and have the body shop do the sanding, primer and paint for $200 - $300.
