I have an 81 and have removed the air pump and related hoses, sensors, vacuum lines, etc. and also the cat. There is definitely a performance improvement in just the convertor removal itself. You can plug the AIR lines on the factory headers with a pipe cap (I forget the size). The computer is still installed and I get no unusual check engine lights. Let me know if I can give you anymoe info.
