I'm looking for a performance carb and intake for a small block 350 that will accomodate the stock air cleaner and still have clearance for the stock hood to close. Any thoughts???

I don't know about your '73, but with my '80, if you want to stick with the stock aircleaner setup, it's an edelbrock performer and a rebuilt/properly setup quadrajet.
I'm running a Weiand Action +Plus manifold with a Holley 4165 (model 6210-3) double pumper spreadbore carburetor. Works perfect with the stock cowl induction air cleaner and hood. Even stock fuel line and accelerator linkage works. Take a look:
I have the Performer manifold with a Holley 4175. I had to us a 1/2" spacer on top of the carb because the air cleaner hit on the vacuum secondary diaphragm
Eddelbrock Performer and a 650cfm Speed Demon. What makes sense about the Barry Grant carbs is that they are probably the only carbs that are an up to date design for the Chevy engines. You think about it the rest were all designed some 30 years ago. Not saying thats a bad thing in itself, a good design will stand the test of time, however we all know their shortcomings.

I have installed a Holley 780 cfm and now use Speed Demon 650 with 1/2" spacer on OEM Winters aluminum manifold and drop base air cleaner, fits fine..... http://members.cardomain.com/73jst4fun

Of course the Chevy SB was designed 50 years ago!!!
Yes, I am. I took the picture a year ago right after I had done the installation. I have since added some MSD looms on the wires :bb
I´m just about to order them as well. Also 6AL box and Blaster2 coil. Are you all happy with what you have now from MSD? Is that crome coil a stock one - looks exactly like my original? Did your wire kit include also the wire between coil and distributor with right kind of boots also?

Yep, everything worked out real well. That's an MSD coil. The wire kit came complete with coil wire and boots. The wires were for a small block Chevy. If I had it to do over again I would get the universal wires and cut to length; they are cheaper and my wires weren't the right length anyway.
You can just barely see where I mounted the 6AL box in the top picture. I mounted it on the bracket where the windsheild washer bottle used to be mounted on.
I'm running a performer intake with a 570 cfm holley street avenger on my small block and it runs great. the street avenger is nice because it's so easy to adjust and has an electric choke unlike the ole' quadrajunk
