Default '82 crate engine-got screwed

Its been a while guys, but finally got the '82 back from having a crate engine installed. I feel that I was overcharged and just plainly got screwed from rushing to get things done.

Can anyone tell me about GM crate engine #10067353? How much should it cost to replace this type of engine and then labor?

Got the car back and it does not seem to run any better than it did before, more power but still idling very rough. So if anyone can shed any light?

Thanks,

D

That engine is "ok". I'm running it right now. With the new cam and heads I installed the car MOVES.

However - in your form, it does well enough to get out of traffic's way. You need to check plugs/timing/tune. Carb probably needs to be adjusted/rebuilt.

If you have no idea when the last time the carb was rebuilt- odds are it needs to be.

This is the basic GM Goodwrench crate engine, formerly known as the "Target" motor. It is a good, basic engine...but don't be fooled by the horsepower figures as it is listed in "gross" HP, not SAE Net HP.

With a few mods, this engine can be made much livelier than in stock form.

I put a 204/214 dur .424/.454 lift cam in mine before install and was pretty happy with it, prolly was putting about 280 hp at the crank. I think swiched to alum heads, 224/232 .540/.580 roller cam with headers, that really woke it up.

Look at those injectors and see if they are spraying a nice fan pattern. If they are dripping or spraying droplets, that is probably your idle problem.

I agree with Bud -
If they simply swapped your crossfire injection system over from one engine to the new one, chances are good your crossfire needs a little cleanup and rebuilding. The crossfire works well when clean, adjusted and set up to spec, but if it's in poor shape, your idle and drivability will suffer immensly, and no new engine will compensate for a bad injection system.

Only engines installed by the factory. Engines sold "over the counter" are rated in gross horsepower. The engine would have to be configured "as installed" to be rated net horsepower and since an OTC engine has no "installed" configuration it's not possible to advertise the net horsepower.

did you have the crate engine installed jsut because it was rough running? If so, you definitely got screwed over. The LM-1 is not better than the original engine, in fact the stocker had forged L82 pistons. The only area where the LM-1 is better is that it has 4 bolt mains and with the CFI power potential you really don't need those. The tough running is very commong. What are the exact symptoms? It may be as easy as swapping to a new weartherpack CTS and rebalancing the TB's to get it running right again.
