Default Tech Help Please...

Hi there and thanks in advance for any helpful hints, ideas...etc
lease bear with me since I am not blessed with a lot of skill in the auto department...Maybe somebody here can help me with my questions...?

1) I'd like to maybe setup a computer in a car (maybe the vette) and was wondering if I don't want to use a power inverter, if I can connect the computer directly to one or more 12V batteries ? How should I install the batteries so that they can be charged by either the alternator or maybe charger but do not drain the main battery for the car itself ?

2) Damaged threads...I have seen some kind of bolts with a thread that are screwed on from the bottom with a nut so they don't fall through and offer threads inside...The only catch is, I don't know how they are called and where to buy them...A trip to Home Depot and Lowe's was no good....

3) Unfortunately the locks on my car don't work...Is there a guide out there that can help ? Is it very difficult ?? (ok, dumb question probably...lol)

4) Where can I find the board for the tachometer ? I ordered the board but now I feel a bit dumb for not knowing where to put it...

5) Anybody has an idea what the black coating material in the trunk is...I am working on removing it and since it looks like it is there for a reason, replacing it would be a good idea...?

Hope I am asking not too many (hopefully not too dumb) questions...

Need some info and pics on your vette..welcome to the board!!!

Think you are looking for a heli - coil. What this does is provide threads for a previous stripped threaded hole. From my experience with them, they do work well when needed.

Did you do a search for power lock troubleshooting? Should be some good stuff there. Just did a search and can't find Jack...tell us the symptoms of the problems you are having with your power locks.

The board for the tach is located behind the tach in the speedo/tach cluster over the steering wheel.

Sure that is some kind of generic sound deadener..would definitly replace if you are there and stripping the old stuff out..reflectix, brown bread or dynomat..should do the trick...hope this helps..Joe!

Sorry...Not sure how to quote here yet...

@81' Corvette Guy:
Heli Coil sounds like what I was thinking of...Where could I find those as nobody at Lowe's or Home Depot had no suggestions other than just drilling bigger holes...

Not sure if I have power locks, don't think so...They just don't seem to work from the outside lock cylinder...inside locking mechanism works fine more or less...Tried graphite but no luck...

Was afraid the board was behind the tach...Gotta look in the manual, maybe it is not that important right now...Should get the car running first...lol

Thanks for the help, I appreciate it, especially since it must be kinda frustrating to probably answer the same questions whenever somebody joins the forum over and over...

Would I get the treatment for the trunk in any hardware store or auto parts store and what works best/is closest to the original ? What would work best to strip it (it is a test of patience) and is there anything that I should not use because it damages the fiberglass ?

@VettePower:
Thought trunk was the technical term for the rear "glove compartment"

It's a 1975...Sorry have no pictures yet....
