Cigarette lighter wiring

I thought wiring the lighter was as easy as hot and ground, but after wiring it, it got hot and stayed hot. Im not talking about the actual lighter element, but the silver piece that you stick the lighter into. After wiring it, it got hot, so I quickly disconnected everything. Could I have wired it wrong, or maybe the piece itself is no good? It wasnt wired when I got the car, and I would like to have the outlet for cell phone, etc.

It should not get hot. If the unit itself is bad (grounded out internally) it will get hot. It is not activated until you push in the lighter element.

Did you go hot to the hookup in the center of the lighter and then ground the round case? If so chunk the old lighter and get a new one.

I did go hot to the post in the center, and ground with the ring around the case. As long as I know I wired it right, I will replace it.
