I've got a 71 l-48, built to about 400hp. I'm about to throw my rear gears in, and wan't to complete the setup with some nitrous. When being built, the engine builders utilized forged flattop pistons, so i should be straight as far as that goes. My deal is this. I'm running out of clearance under my hood. I love my 3'' airfilter, and hate to see it go. If i get a plated system, i'll have to buy a new filter, and the system itself is decently complicated to install. On the other hand, i've been looking at the holley Top shot, adjustable from 75-150hp. For safety reasons, i don't want to go past 75hp plate or not. Do you think its worth it go plated, or should i just get the top shot. Price is relatively the same, about 450 either way... most of the cost in the bottle. Any thoughts?
You want even feel a 75 shot. Don't waste the time or money on that small of a shot.
100 you start feeling it.
125 hold on.
150 weak link finder.....
If you are at 400 hp, then 500 hp is alot of power. You are going to need a driveshaft loop and rev limiter also. Have you dyno'ed the motor to know exactly what you are working with?
You have to be using a mechanical secondary carb to use the top shot system, so the secondarys open imediately. I'm using the Edelbrock performer system, and running the 100 hp jets and love it.I was suprised that I could still use my stock hood and air cleaner, with a modified top ring, even with the ZZ430 intake. To be safe I'm using a Hobbs fuel pressure switch, MSD window switch set to come in at 2900 RPMs and shut off at 6200 and a WOT throttle switch. Plan on buying a bottle heater if you want max power when temps are below about 75 degrees.

What kind of fuel system are you running? Meaning, what kind of fuel pump setup, and what is your fuel pressure when spraying?
OK, where are you going to put the bottle?? Your 71 has that tray for the rear window right? That takes up all the head room for the bottle. I dont think there is enough height for it in the back because of it. The only place I see to put the bottle is either on top of the rear compartments, or somehow attach it to the inside of the spare tire carrier.
I'm using an Edelbock 1721 fuel pump, I'm still working on my fuel pressure, if I don't hook up the fuel return line the pump will hold about 5 psi at wot with the nitrous on, but my fuel pressure is about 9 psi at idle which is to high. If I hook up the return line unrestricted the idle pressure drops to 6 psi but the wot pressure also drops.I tried several sizes of orfices to find a happy medium but I wasn't satisfied with the results. The just recieves a Barry Grant fuel by pass valve that should stop the return of fuel when the psi goes below 6 psi (Adjustable) allowing by to have full fuel pressure at wot and still lower my idle psi.
I think the ticket for the Vette is to plumb a Nitrous Express System into the manifolds plenum when clearance gets iffy .
Thats what I did ...anyway .
Actually , they will do it for the customer and bench test it to make certain it sprays to the correct area . Their labor is relatively inexpensive too .
