Default Auto Meter Gauges install questions

Anybody install these in place of the center console gauges?
How hard is it to re-wire them? What needs to be done to replace
the center console gauge circuit board?
TIA

I did that on my 72.

Mark all the wires to the original gauges when you take the console cluster out.
Then disconnect everything.
Take the back plate totally off. You won't reuse it.
Go to the hardware store and look in the plumbing department.
Get 2 inch o-rings that slip over your gauges from behind.
Then insert the gauges into the cluster bezel.
The o-rings will make a seal to the bevel in the bezel,
I ran a new hot wire from an acc terminal on the fuse block and tee'd all the gauges together.
I also tee'd all the grounds together and grounded to the engine block.
Use the original gauge light wires to power the new lights.
Hook up the original gas sender wire, etc to the new.
You'll finish with a few extra original wires. I cut mine short at the harness and tape sealed them together and out of the way.
Tip- the Autometer gauges are secured by a u-shaped clamp from behind. You will have to spread the legs of the clamp a bit to rest flat on the back side of the bezel.

Hope I didn't forget anything.

Thanks for the input. Did your 72 have a circuit board for the gauges?

I'm writing under the assumtion that you're doing this in your 79? I also have a 79 and just completed the same thing using A.M. Cobalts. I don't have the time it takes to answer in depth right now, but in short, you will find that the round gauges wont fit your face without cutting them round except for the clock. They will also overlap the valleys in the face that simulate it being an aircraft instrument panel. I got around this temporarily by using A.M.'s angle bezels, but will eventually just have a new face made out of aluminum and paint to match. I discarded the circuit board as you cant use the backing plate anyway and hardwired. Had a new face made over the steering column for speedo, tach, oil, volt, and temp. Used LED's for turn and highbeam indicators, a small panel light for brake warning. It approximates the original as much as possible. There's a lot more to it, but as I said, I'm short of time. If you have questions, feel free to e-mail me.

I am not looking forward to my gauge project in my 77, Have to get the wiring schematics and then start having the fun. Luckily it won't be till next year, and HOPEFULLY it will be more straight forward than I am anticipating.

I can't remember if Chevy changed the face style in 76 or 77. Anyway, if the face in your car is flat with round holes for the gauges, it won't be any harder than in any other car, probably easier than most. It's the ones like mine (78+, I think) that take some pretty serious forethought because of the way it simulates pull out modules like in an aircraft instrument panel. I had actually thought of buying a face for a 77 for that reason, but it wouldn't mount to the air ducts properly. The cluster over the steering wheel is easy. You shouldn't have any problems.
