They are worth every penny. I've had the 17 spline for many many years. The only thing better is the same item only with 30 splines. But then you have to get all the accompaning hardware.
Smokedtires bought the 30 spline setup all from www.tomsdifferentials.com I also went to tom's $700 posi units. I used to break a posi unit about once a year even with my smaller motors. 315/17 rear tires and weekend slicks just eat them up. I'm up to 4 years now and I was going to tear it down and inspect the posi unit this winter.
I've posted about my problems of the rearend getting so hot that you can't touch the pumpkin for 20 minutes after pulling into the pits after just a 1/2 hour out on the road racing track.
I considered some kind of rear end cooler. I run 100/140 full synthetic and posi lube. One thing that has helped is ER Energy Release. It's a metal treatment. My 12+ year old richmond 4.11 gears still look nice.
The problem is 4.11 with such a small pinion gear that when you start turning it 7500 rpm or even in the worst case drive shaft speeds over 9000 rpm in .70 overdrive.
Rear gears are a TQ multiplier. So if you have 500 foot pounds from the motor the yokes and half shafts start feeling 4X that much with a 4.11.
So years ago when I had posi units go at first the main hardened pin through the case starts to elongate the hole untill it eventually either brakes the case or the pin comes out and wedges inside. It's a very bad sound! I bought the big buck yokes that didn't fail, but you have to get the big hard posi case units with the larger pin. It exterts the stress over a larger area.
Jim and those guys with 540+ ci actually go to the monster IRS
The pictured Yokes are made by International Axel company. The yokes are THE BEST! on the market bar none! I run them in my 72 LT-1 (12.28@117MPH with slicks!) and have yet to see any twist in the splines. The Tom's Differential 30 spline side yokes ar not one piece and I know of a road racer that "lost" a companion flange on a "Tom's" differential side yoke about 15 years ago, the wreck afterwards was not PRETTY! and did considerable damage to the car (estimated to be doing better that 120MPH when the bolts failed on the flange.) I do buy rebuild parts from Tom's and his differentail cross shafts are the best on the market but, International Axel gets my business for heavy duty side yokes AND spindles. The machining and materials are better on the International Axel parts than any of Tom's parts.
Solid Lt1 - that's good to know. I had just heard that the 30 spline was even better than my 17.
I also think that Smart Struts that do such a good job of limiting camber during the up and down travel of the rear wheels also keeps the yokes in and out travel at a minimum.

I don't know about their older axles, but my 30 splines axles are all 1 piece. I did break 1 but feel it was defected because it broke waaay to easily, luckily I was leaving a light so I wasn't going very fast when it happened.
Interesting notes. I think it comes down to what the car is going tobe used for. For street use I'll still use the rebuilt yokes, but HD racing would be questionable for sure.
LT1- question for you on the Int Spindles. I haven't used them yet but have used the Tom's stock ones and found the flanges ran out .009" I had to correct this but shouldn't have had to. Did you check the runout in the flange before assembling them? I chucked them up in a lathe and used an indicator on the face of the flange to check. Hopefully this was the case only with my spindles and it was a couple of years ago.

This goes back to my whole thread about rear ends...it seems to me that they do tend to go bunk side up fairly often when you get into high hp ranges. I was going to do carbon fiber drive and half shafts with different u joints and yokes, but will that be enough on the 500+ hp side of things reving to 7 grand?
I picked up a set of these today for a fairly good price. These are the same ones sold by Mid America correct? They have the number# 195700 & M738 and I believe a CF cast into them. The caps also have arrows noting orientation.
They were collecting dust on the shelf of a specialty shop.
