Default Breakerless ignition installation/general engine problem question...

Okay, so I've been having problems with my 72 Stingray - car began sputtering worse and worse until it simply died on me and does not restart. Anyway, I installed a Mallory Unilite electronic conversion, but the car still did not start. The installation calls for an ignition ballast resistor, and I had to use a generic one rated at .6-1.7 Ohms, whereas the manual recommends Mallory's specific one rated at .7-1.5. After the failed attempt at starting the car, I noticed the generic resistor was smoking and the ceramic was darkened in areas...is this because it's the wrong resistor or because of a wiring error? Any other suggestions for what might be causing my problem? Original thread is here:

When I put a Unilite on my '70 5 years ago I didn't use a ballast resister. My '70 has a calabrated resistance wire.

You may want to get a wireing diagram for your '72 and see if it has the same thing.

Hope this helps.

I believe that Chevy did away with the ballast resistor in '68. As BigBlockk stated, they replaced it with a resistor wire going to the coil.

Good luck!

How exactly would I check if it had this?
