Already tried to search the archives, but can't pull anything decent up. Anyone have any suggestions on shift kits. Any advantage of Transgo over B&M? And there are two types of B&Ms and two types of Transgos. One is cheaper than the other. I am just looking for a firm shift and would like a small tire chirp on high speed shifting...Also would like option to shift manually when I want to. Which kit do I need? And where can I get one? None of the transgos are sold at any auto parts stores here in Austin that I know of, only B&Ms and they only stock them for T350s. Thanks
Your auto parts store should be able to order you a BM shift kit for a TH400. My dad got one for his 74...doesn't do any drag racing, just street driving, and it shifts very hard with chirping going into 2nd. Good price too...should be about $50 or less.
When I was in the market for a shift Kit for my TH400 I went with the TransGo Kit. The forum chose this Kit 3 to 1 over the B&M one.
It is available at Summit.
I have mine set at Street/Strip. A huge improvement over stock!

I installed the street/strip Transgo kit in my Turbo 400 25 years ago, it was the best thing I ever did. Nice crisp shifting under normal driving, firmer upshifts when you pushed it, and it would turn the car sideways ('67 Firebird) when you pushed it to the floor. I purchased the transmission from a rebuild shop who provided a 90 day warranty on the unit. I told the owner that it was going behind a 396 (yep, in the Firebird) and asked him if it would it stand the strain. He said there was no way that I could hurt a Turbo 400.
45 days later I pulled out the transmission and layed it on his bench. He disassembled the unit and stared in horror at the burned plates and said "Just what the hell are you running?" He rebuilt it for the parts cost and said "Don't come back, there's no more warranty". That was when I installed the Transgo kit. I never had the transmission out again. But I broke many universals, rear differentials and axles after that! Be aware that the Transgo kit required (back then) that you change the pressure regulator spring in the front pump (which could be done from under the car). If that is still part of the kit, the new spring is a tough one to compress and install the c-clip by yourself. Two people makes it much easier.
