We recently installed a new 383 in our '70 vert, and it has a 4 spd. Drove the car 2 weeks ago, did a donut or two, and parked it, no problem. Get in the car this past weekend, and as soon as I lay into the throttle, the shifter violently jolts to the right, and I hear some loud noises. Put the car in the air, and there are rings on the driveshaft where it rubbed, and its definatley not strait within the tunnel. Pull it out to inspect, and its perfectly strait. When I look at the motor from inside the car, it looks crooked in the engine bay. My motor mounts are tight, brand new, and my tranny mount is pretty new, and all looks tight there. I then fired it up again, revv'ed it up a few times, and the shifts a bit like it should, so the mounts are definatley holding (Delco rubber mounts).
Moving back to the rearend, everything looks good, is next to new, and wasnt touched during the motor swap. What could my problem be? Could I just have a bad motor mount?
What do you mean the mounts are nice and tight? With the hood up try putting the car in gear with the parking brake on and let out on the clutch some, the eng will torq up on the driver side most likely if the driver side mount is busted.
Joe it sure sounds like mounts. I had a sheared left mount in my car and didn't know it until I was test driving it without the shift boot one day. I noticed the tranny shifting to the right side everytime I shifted it. When I removed it, it fell in two pieces. You didn't have theproblem before the new motor right?

Forgot to mention I had one go, it does not tear apart into peices but rather the rubber separates from the metal so when it is still installed it looks fine but when you pull the eng the it will come a part.

Jack up on that tranny mount, I'll bet it sheared. Joe
Maybe motor mounts too. Were they new with the new engine? OOPS I didn't read enough of your post, I see they were new. 383's are torque monsters, you might want something a little stronger then stock mounts, like polyurethane.

Yea, I guess my first thing to do is buy a set of poly motor mounts. They arent too expensive. Is there anyone who makes a poly tranny mount that will work with a '70? I didnt even think to jack up on the back of the tranny at all, the mount "looks" to be fine, but I guess it sure could be separated from the steel. That would definatley explain what happened. Thanks for all the input...
Joe stay away from the Energy Suspension tranny mount,#3.1108G, it doesn't fit corvette. I have one sitting on my bench for a year now,new in box. They fit everything but a vette even though the Summit cat says all. I used one form the other poly company in Jegs cat but I don't recall the name off hand, I had to call both poly companies direct to find out.
