Default Another Brake thread

I was wondering if cold weather would have anything to do with my spongy pedal becoming no pedal? I currently know that I need to get a new master cylinder, but up until this morning I still had a decent pedal and could still drive on it. But when I went to leave for work this morning I backed out and the pedal went straight to the floor. So I was just wondering if it being cold could cause more air to get into the brakes or if I just really need to change the master cylinder?

Thanks
Dan

OOOO, i hope someone replies to this! i am experiencing the SAME thing. I'm not sure i need a new master cylinder, as when i went to have it checked out they said it all looked good, just that i had some air in the left front line. well i think the air is back... and today it was exectionally "spongey".

hopefully I can just bleed the brakes again and get a decent peddle until I can either get it in to have the MC replaced or I can find another cheap car. So I'll go ahead and bump it to the top

The cold weather may be making the seals stiff causing a bad seal to become worse. I have had several master Cylinders go bad (I have owned many POS's) but ironiacaly they all went bad in the summer. You need to replace the MC ASAP if you are at the "pumping them up stage". The total No brake stage is not far away. It is bad enough to have an accident and hurt or kill someone...but to have that happen, and know you should have done something about it, is something you will never get over. Replace the M/C its $100 or less...dont worry about the weather....its bad and that is not something to screw around with.

a rebuilt master cylinder costs under $30 at carquest.... i consider brakes the most important part of a car and my highest priority, if they are not working right don't drive the car.

If you have a bad M/C then that's what you have, they work fine in the cold. Driven vettes through New England winters without issue with the brakes-as long as they were in good shape. Did you check for leaks in the system? Bad M/C will leak out the back seal, bad calipers will show leaks at the inside of the tires and by pulling when the brakes are applied. Rotor runout should be under .005" too.

high runout also causes air to get into your brake system. Sounds like your MC though.

sorry guys, I missed all the replies!
well I think the master cylinder is not all that is wrong, I think I a hole in a line too! I havent drivenit since saturday night and I cant get any peddle to even pull it farther into the driveway, so I had to push it. I noticed a puddle under where the cross member was sitting and i couldnt really tell due to no light and rain what fluid it ws but I bet it was brake fluid. So I will had to figure something out as soon as I get a day with some sun and no rain!

Im sure I will need some more help when I do get a chance to work on them. Thankfully I got my winter beater and dont have to depend on the Vette for transportation.

Thanks for your help
