Default Water pump question (long v. short)

Hello,

I have a question for you, I would like to know the difference between a short water pump and a long water pump? Which is better? why?

This is why:
I 1968 coupe with a rebuilt 327 engine (HT 327/350)
During the rebuild, I installed a short water pump by Weiand. The pump number is 8202.
Here is a link to it:
Current: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...4922128+302019
The Company also offers a long version:
Long: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...4922128+302019
As well as a corvette version.

My question is, Do you think the short version will work on this engine? Do you think that it will affect my cooling system negatively and if so how will it affect it and what symptoms should I look for? Should I have purchased the long or corvette versions of this pump? Ultimately do I have to purchase a new pump? (I hope the answer to this is no because I am running out of money)

Thanks in advance,
Joe

Default still confused

After doing some brief research, I have found that in 1968 the 327 engines had short waterpumps and they swithced to long waterpumps in 1969? DO you think it is still correct to have a short water pump on my engine or should I switch to a long?

Thanks for the reply.
All the C3s use short water pumps? Or just the 1968?
What is the difference between the long and the short water pump?
Thanks,
Joe

ALL Corvettes, not just the '68. And the difference in the pump sizes is for clearance.

There is no advantage either way except for one of them will fit your car and the other one will not. The size of the snout might change over the years but consult a parts book to verify that.

I beleive the difference between a short and long water pump refers to the depth of the legs on either side of the pump where the mounting bolts go. The backside of a long water pump sits further away from the timing chain cover than a short pump does.

I can find no refernce to any performance difference between the 2 designs.

I have the short pump on there now and it does not leak and it seems to fit.

I know it, in the original post I mentioned that, but the short pump seems to fit. I just was not sure if there was a performance difference.
Do you think the short pump is incorrect, but still fits the block???
Not likely right?

The correct pump for a '68 is the short pump. In '72 or '73 they changed to a Corvette only pump.

So this 454 that I got from a 1-ton truck came with a new water pump. I'm going to guess is is a long style and won't work in the vette right? Great, something else I have to buy.

guys,
i've the long pump (off my 1980 camaro) on my 77 vette,
maily because i wanted the location of the alternator to be on the passenger side so i could dip the power steering fluid easier and partly because it looks neater with the alternator over there,
just my 2 cents,
neil,

The second "short" smallblock Corvette pump is a '71 - '82 only pump. It's not exactly a short in that the dimensions are just slightly different from a traditional short smallblock pump and the pulley pilot diameter for this second pump is 3/4" while all pre '71 Corvette and all other smallblock short pumps are 5/8" diameter pilots. If you wanted to get real technical, there are also variations for what would be considered a "correct" pump that would include the provision for an external bypass.

And no, there is no performance difference. It all has to do with accessory drive setups.
