What alternator are you using (brand and amperage)? I am planning on being somewhat stock on my 71 other than..........electric fans (possibly dual), modern stereo/CD player, EFI computer, electric headlight actuators.
However, I would recommend a GM CS-144 or CS-130. There are plenty of websites out there for pointers on installation. These supposedly put out more amps at the lower RPM ranges. I'll probably go to one of these soon.

When my OEM one started getting noisey, I looked for a local chrome one and found it at Kragen. It was just a 62A unit but worked for about a year 'til last month. It smoked!
I took it out and had it rebuilt by a local vendor. For 85.00 he put all new 94A innards in it, with new bearings etc and it's great now. With the A/C on, at idle in gear the blower now pumps the same volume air that it used to only while driving. Big difference.
I have the Powermaster 140amp, but I also have March underdrive pullies. I hope the 140 isn't too much, because I tend to overkill. I'm not sure how much the output will decrease with the underdrive pullies either....
I have a 140 Amp Powermaster from summit in my 79. I moved it from the left side near the headers (stock) to up top between the water neck and the right valve cover. I moved it because it was pulling hot air directly from over the driver side headers. Cooling air is pulled in from the rear on these alternators. I was able to use the existing brackets. I flipped the "Y" bracket over and mounted it in a different hole on the drivers side cylinder head. Fabed a small "L" bracket to position and support it inboard from the intake manifold. Then I trimmed the length and side of the slider bracket to fit. Mounted the lower end of the slider bracket from one of the right side water pump bolts (replaced it with a stud). It works great and it was cheap and looks good.
