Default Key Interlock Cable removal

Hi,
I was wondering if removing the Key Interlock Cable from my 74 Vette would pose any problems. I am rebuilding the engine and steering column and have had problems with the cable and removing my key from the ignition in the past (cable seemed to bend). It seems like GM put a lot of effort and parts into this system simply to not be able to remove your key unless the car was in reverse (manual shift). Does anybody know why they did this? Anything else I should look at before I put the engine or steering column back in? Anyhow, I rebuilt the steering columns sloppiness by taking it apart and tightening the four bolts further on down in the column. Everything is tight now. Painted it also. Looks great.

Thanks,
Rob ('74 Silver Bullet)

I have not had mine on for about 5 years now. Never had a problem with it. I doubt it could be used with the Tremec I have anyway. I took it out because it was a PITA every time I had to do work on the trans.
