As most of yall know I am a student so I can not afford to buy new wheels, and unfortunately I will be needing new tires when I get my car back from the body shop on Tuesday ! So what tires would yall recommend for stock wheels on a '76?

Being frugal and prudent is great. Avoid overmarketed name-brand oils or skip the chrome goo-gahs or fancy custom paint jobs or hyped bolt-on go-fast junk.
But skimp on a safety item like tires w/ S or T rated el cheap-o tires on a classic corvette with it's fiberglass fenders? I would never ever do that or recommend it to anyone else.
Don't skimp on tires. I bet you could get some H or better tires w/ a little savvy for less or equal to what some guys paid for low performance tires w/ less of a safety margin.
Tire prices are NEGOCIABLE. Don't accept the first price the counterman quotes you. See what kind of prices you can find locally on an H-rated tire in a size you want (and stick to H when they try to steer you to the lesser fare). How about the Cooper Cobra GTH-S in 225/70R15 - my hunch is that might be one of the better bang/buck tires out that that I would consider 'acceptable'. As an H tire it should be a stronger tire (which helps in performance as well), better heat rejection characteristics and an added safety margin over the typical S or T rated ilk. Typically H tires command a ~15% premium of the cheapo S or T ilk however a lower profile brand like Cooper that doesn't spend a lot of money on commercials or magazine ads may offset that somewhat...? Just a thought.
Pirelli Scorpion Zero its a V rated tire and it is cheaper than the BFG radial TA. It only comes in 255/60 in the 15" rim though.
It's a weaker tire, lower temperature handling, likely harder compound... You mean to tell me people spend more on it?! Did not know that - never bothered to seriously look at the prices of tires like this before. A testament to the power of marketing and branding if ever I saw one.
I would be curious to know the street price on 225/70 Cooper GTH-Ss if anybody looks at them. I would expect it should be cheaper than the Pirellis. The various V rated 225/70s will be likely be a bit more especially the Firestone & General because they are marketed to governmental buyers.
225/70 is the std OE size for '76. A 255/60 should fit.
I agree Tire Rack has the best prices but my favorites are the Firestone Firehawks. ot only a great price but a great tire. I have used them on other cars with great all year round use in NJ and plan on replacing the Hoosier's that have been on my '78 since I bought it.

I have a set of Firestone Firehawk Indy 500s (255-60) on my '77, and I love them. Tirerack had them on sale for less than the standard Firehawk when I was looking for tires - now I just need to find some way to paint the winged Indy logo white.

I cannot critize any of the other tires because I have not tried them. I have had firestones and they do not last. I find BFG are inexpensive and last a long time. They are even fairly sticky once heated up. They also have that nostalga look. My $0.02

I know what you mean. If they had done the winged logo in white and the Firestone logo as well, the tire would be a grand slam in the looks department. Actually I wish I could find the SS20 tires still, that was a good looking tire. But I could live with the Indy 500 tire if I can make the winged logo and Firestone logo white. I guess I will have to buy them and then bust out the white tire paint pen when the time comes to get new tires.
Firestone PV41 is a police vehicle "V" rate tire available in 225/70/15 and 235/70/15. You have to ask for them. They do not advertize them. The only V tire in town
