A bad gas cap can do the same thing. If it isn't sealing then the fumes can be coming from there.

I totally agree with Diablo Kid....My Garage stays closed most of the time and there are 3 cars in there....Not one hint of a Gasoline Odor!!
If you smell Gas...there is a leak somewhere!!

Default Is your carb dripping fuel in the intake?

I have a '63 FI car and noticed a strong smell in the garage after sitting for a while. Turns out the spider check valve was bad and it allowed fuel to drip into the top end. A sure sign of this happening to you is if your carb is empty after a few days. You'll know this is happening to you if you have to crank the car over a lot longer than usual when starting for the first time after sitting.

I had the same gas smell problem for a couple of weeks. Looked everywhere and couldn't find anything leaking. After about 2 weeks the fuel pump started dripping onto the floor. I replaced the fuel pump and no more gas smell. Good luck.

Check tank for very small pin holes.
Check all lines at the tank
Check this out
Mine was at the gasket were the filler mates to the tank.
The gasket between the fill and tank were it bolts together was disengrated. after I replaced it that solved the problem.
also are the lawn mower,,weed-eater etc, and gas can's in the garage?????

also the check valve(little box on the tank ) when you fill the tank too high- these boxes leak- i took 2 of them apart , the top was glued on by the manufactuer,, and after 30 yrs the glue is shot,,theres a ''ping pong ball ''in there and a check valve, i re-glued the top with j-b weld, let dry and painted, no leaks and i got a spare one,,, there hard to find....

Default That Smell

Way back when I had my 69, it had a gas smell. The rochester 4MV carburetor had two inlets for the gas line. Chevy used a lead plug for the extra one. It would leak gas . I was in the service then and an engineman gave me a sealant to fix it. Later read an article in one of the magazines that they were causing engine fires when they fell out...

Hope there isn't a water heater or clothes dryer in your garage.
Would the next poster please spell oder or odor properly for me?
good luck
If you see fire, there's fire..If you smell gas, you have a leak somewhwhere. I had the smell too and left a couple paper towels covering my fuel lines....sure enough, there was a small leak being absorbed by the towels and evaporating.

Yep, it's ODOR.

In my case it was back at the gas tank from a rotted and unused fuel return line.
The one thing I have noticed about the location of the odor: it seems to get stronger and stronger the nearer one gets to the carb. What that means remains to be seen I guess as this thread hopefully continues. I think the charcoal or underneath line in vicinity of carb may more likely be the answer than the tank. But, I am not ruling out anything until I get up under there and look around everywhere from the front to the back. Just have not had time yet this week but the smell is not going away. Noticed it again this morning...and thank goodness the washer & dryer are not in garage....but, my wife's car is constantly in & out of there. She is very nervous about it so maybe I move it outdoors until discovery of the source.
