I have a 71 with a mechanical tach. When it gets cold out, I get a loud ticking sound from the dash. Turns out its coming from the Tach. Just to be sure I disconnected the cable and the noise stops along with the tach of course. The cable looks good and im using a new MSD tach driive dist with new tach gear. In the worm weather the noise is not there.
Can these tachs be cleaned or is there something that has to be greased etc.?
The first thing I would try is take out the inner cable and clean it and put some light weight grease on it. Sometimes the old grease gets kind of hard and does not allow the cable to spin freely when cold.
That might explain the temperature differnce in causing the sound difference. With cold weather, the grease in the cable may not be as viscous as when it heats up.
I would think that maybe the cable turning in the outer shell would tend to heat it up also.
I agree with the previous post of trying to replace the lubricant and maybe adding some new grease to it.
