Not sure if I should of posted this in the Regional section, but I have a question on registering my 78 Vette in Virginia. I don't plan on driving it that much as I have a 2 year old that I must pick up at the sitters four days a week. So in trying to save some money on registration, I was thinking about registering it with Antique tags. My question is if I do this, do I need to get antique insurance or will the insurance company not care. Right now I have a quote for liability only through USAA, which my other two cars are insured with. I tried to get this answered through the USAA Rep I was talking to, but she just kept saying she would have to transfer me. If anyone can answer I would appreciate it. Thanks
What does a registration cost in Virginia? I'm getting ready to move there next month...what kind of $ we looking at? However, you have USAA so I'm assuming you have some type of affiliation w/ the military...doesn't the military give you some type of non-residency form to take to the DMV? Guess I'm assuming you're active duty? I'll ask around..maybe i'll consider doing the same thing.

I have mine registered in VA as an antique. I have it insured as such through State Farm with my other cars and since it is an antique it only costs $140 a year!!! Cant beat that.
There are mileage limits and such but Ill never exceed them (4000/year?)
Hope that helps!
mike229 - Did you have to purchase antique insurance or did you just do that because you wanted to. Mine needs some work done so I don't want to pay the extra for antique insurance but since I don't see driving that many miles a year (maybe back and forth to work once a week...yes I know that is "breaking" the rules)...so I would like to save a few cents.
shinnbone - Sorry...but I don't have a straight answer to give you. It depends on where in VA you move to. Va. Beach recently dropped their city stickers and worked those fees into your registration. I just received the renewel for my wife's van and I think it was 65.00. On top of that I think we still pay for plates as well, which standard I believe run 35.00. I get so many DMV envelopes in the mail I forget what is what. I didn't take the Navy route in life but was bought up in a Navy family. USAA and Navy Federal are some perks I get to continue to use. Sometimes I wish I had taken that route though.
Forgot Shinnbone...on top of those fees we also pay property tax yearly. Right now we have property tax relief which is 70% of the value. However we have had a fight for a few years to get that to 100% or move it back...most likely to 0%. To be honest 70% helps us out a lot and I would hate to see the relief taken away.
Nobody mentioned to you that when you register a car in Virginia as an antique ------- you're only supposed to drive it on weekends,to & from having it worked on, and special events. Most people drive the way they want to, but if you have a cop that sees you often and goes by the book --- you might have a problem ! A friend of mine had that happen , but most people have no problem ! Rick

I wanted to - its WAY cheaper and it enabled me to use "agreed" value for coverage. If it gets stolen or wrecked, I have a set $ amount coming to me no questions asked. All they wanted were pictures of the car which I gave them. I intend to follow the limitations 454canam describes so there is no issue for me -a no brainer.. good luck!
My corvette is registered as any other car, but my 65 Mustang is registered with vintage 65 Virginia plates as an antique vehicle. I have regular liability coverage thru USAA on it, supplemented with a collector policy for collision and comprehensive. USAA doesnt care about how the car is registered. You can pretty much drive the car as you want to with the vintage tags. If hassled by the police, tell them you were working on the car and just going for a test ride. I have never heard of anyone having a problem unless they were doing something stupid ( ie burnouts etc).
oh yeah, I know about the restrictions. I truely am not trying to weasel out of paying full price for the Vette and then use it as a daily driver. Heck...the number of farm trucks in Va. Beach just makes me laugh...we do have some farms...but not that many worth around here. The Vette is not in the best condition to use everyday and chances are the only time I would really drive would be to take it some place to get something done. Not sure what the $$ difference is between antique and normal registration. The car is exempt from property tax so that is a plus.
Thanks Go-Gone, that is pretty much what I figured. One day when the Vette is more restored and driven more often I would probably look into full insurance on it...but for now I am not that concerned.

Thanks to all that replied.
David - Antique Registration is $10 and one time only - permanent plates.
Regular Reg. is like $30 and then $30 every year plus you may still have to pass emmisions if you register normal.
I would highly recommend registering antique and then get a classic car policy. I dont see any upside whatsoever to the standard registration or insurance unless its a daily driver - even then Id still register antique and maybe consider a standard Insurance policy
Thanks Mike229 for the registration fee amount. I think that is the way I am going to go (Antique reg w/ standard liability). As far as emissions...we don't have to deal with that yet. Only a matter of time though I am sure.
One other plus with the vintage tag and registration is that you dont have to screw around with getting it inspected either. No sticker needed, just drive.
I have my 73 registered with vanity antique plates. For plates and registration, title transfer it cost me 75.00. For vanity plates was 95.00 extra plates good for five years. For insurance, I have State Farm. I set my own value at 15,000. It cost 135 a year. Can only drive 2000 miles per year. If I insured it with regular insurance it would of ran 358.00 per year but with no mile restriction. But an adjuster would determine value of car if hit. Didn't want to chance that. So i went theother way. Also no emission test needed with antique plates.
registered my 69 for 30 bucks i think last year. antique registratoin lasts forever. and the property tax was based on a 100$ "value" how they came up with that number i have no idea, but a buck and some change for taxes every year aint so bad
