Default Rear End Question.......

I marked my rear tire and also the drive shaft. I turned the tire one full turn and the driveshaft turned just over 3 turns, maybe 3 1/8 turns. Does this mean I have a 3.07 rear end? Also, what would happen if I replaced the rear end with a 3.27 or something else would I mess up anything? Thanks in advance.

Changing rear end ratio affects the speedometer. You'd have to change a speedometer gear in the transmission.

Since GM never offered 3.25:1 gears, you probably have either 3.07/3.08s, or 3.31s/3.36s.

An even more-accurate method is to count drive-shaft revolutions over 10 tire revolutions:
it becomes easier to rule-out slack and sloppiness.

Going to a deeper gear (higher-numerically/lower-machanically) will help off-the-line acceleration, but reduce top-speed, fuel-mileage, and increase highway cruise RPM at any given MPH.

I'd say 3.08 gears. 3.36 would turn the drive shaft a little over 3 1/4 turns.
