I'm assuming you're talking about the LS1 350 ci small block motor that is in the 1997-2004 C5 vettes versus the LS6 454 ci big block motor of the 1971 C3 vette. The big block LS6 has a carburator and bigger valve covers as compared to the modern fuel injected LS1 small block in the C5s.

No, I would assume your asking between a LS1 used in '97-'04 Vette's & LS6 used in '01-'04 Z06 Vette's. You should post this in the C5 section. Lots of people should know the external differences. castings etc...
The only real noticeable difference is the red fuel rail/coil covers
I believe the casting marks/# on the block and heads should give you the answer. Posting this in the C5 forum would probably be more beneficial.

168 is your baby. It also is has a darker finish, because of the metal structure. Most 2001 and 2002 Camaros/Firebirds are LS6 blocks with LS1 heads/LS6 intake. So if the block codes are LS6 and it came out a F-Body it's the 330+hp version. LS6 intakes do not have a EGR hole behind the throttle body. (Shown in both pics above) To confuse you more Escalades have LS1 block with LS6 heads. Regardless, all of them are good, but the LS6 block will spin up faster and hit a highier rpm range.
I was talking about the 97 and newer gen III small block LS1 -vs- LS6.
I found out that the casting number on the heads are a definate way of telling them apart. The LS1 end with 341 and the LS6 number ends with 343. Also the valve springs retainer washers have a yellowish tint on the LS6.
Nope, there are subtle differences as Budman stated above. There are also some fuel rail differences. I've heard that Escalade version is pretty good too. Has a iron block if memeory serves.
The Escalade uses the truck style intake that is much taller, but flows the same as an LS6 intake.
Also, the LS6 heads are 243 not 343. This number can be seen on the top right hand side of the head looking at the exhaust ports and is visible with the fuel rail covers on and the engine in the car. Not just the retainers, but the valve springs themselves will be a yellow color for the 02+ LS6.
Budman78, what kinda mileage are you getting with your combo? I drool every time I see pics of it.
Not a clue yet, still need to hook up the speedo and tach. It should be around 18 to 20. If I could keep my foot out of it for 2 minutes, it might be better.
Why don't you go ahead and find you a motor. We'll help you through it.

Speaking of that, I was wondering but forgot to ask earlier if you solved the swapping ends thing? I remember it was something about swaybars.

Two much power to the rear tires and a tight sway bar. First gear is scarey and first to second shift is painful. I will post some video soon. The 275 - 60's rear tires have got to go. The front end goes way to high on launch and the tires seem to balloon up. Kinda hard to describe the feeling, but it's a hand full. If I have time this friday, I may go put some dyno #'s down at lunch.
