I posted recently about how to get the trim off my 78 windshield. Well I did it today and heres how. Warning you must be careful!
I took the side trim off, its screwed on. The top was the problem ,I could not see under it and could not see how the clips worked. So I started on the drivers side end and pulled up and away from the windshield til it snapped away from the (now broken)clip. I then could use my flashlight to see the other clips. There were about 9 others. The "y" tool you can buy for gm cars will not work so dont waste your time.(like I did) The clips have a U shape(female) that the trim slot (male) snaps into. I took a long handle(longer is best) flat screwdriver and placed in under the trim and into the lower part of the U of the 2nd clip and slowly twisted it while pulling up on the trim. The trim will then snap loose and you will have no damage. Proceed down the line.
Things I learned: Only 4 of my clips were attached to the frame, I thought all 10 were suppose to be riveted to it? The remaining 6 were only holding the trim and t-bar trim together.
The "professional" I hired to remove my windshield immediately broke it getting it out.
He did have a neat little trim removal tool that has a triangle on the end and showed me how to use it to remove the trim. This thing works so I will be adding one to my tool box.
It worked so well I removed the trim off my rear window with it in just a few minutes.
Steve I don't know how to post pics but I will take one with my digital camera and maybe I can send it to you.
Sure, not a problem. I'll post it for others if you want. Send it to Skrech@adelphia.net_removethis. Just drop everything from the underline on and it will work. I detest e-mail bots.
I have noticed that (over the C3 years) the upper windshield trim
clips vary - in the number that are screwed into the W/S frame.
I posted in a thread about this before. The archives from those
days are long gone, so I cannot reference it. I think the lowest # was 4, though.
Good luck with the rust. Hopefully, you won't have to replace
any of the frame.
Steves74 I sent you the best pics I could take, thank you for posting them . I have no pic of the correct tool to use but eastridge has it, it has a sharp triangle on the end of a metal handle.
