Default Fuel tank vent, return lines: Need advice

I'm in the middle of a frame-up rebuild on my '75, upgrading wherever I can. I'm ready for the fuel system. I have Earl's -8 flex hose for the supply line (starting to wonder if its outside dimensions are so fat as to get pinched between frame and body when the body goes back on...?).

It sounds like I should install a return line to avoid vapor lock: correct? Any way around having to install a vapor line? Should vapor line run along right or left frame rail?

As far as the stock vent line, did it go to the charcoal canister and run along the left frame rail? For simplicity's sake can I get a non-vented tank (or else plug the vent at the tank) and simply use a vented gas cap, eliminating the whole line and canister? Any drawbacks to that?

And last, I need a new tank. Will an alternate year's tank fit in my '75 and give me a bit more capacity, or should I stick with the stock replacement? Any brand(s) made better quality than other, or are they all about the same (Dr. Rebuild vs. Ecklers, etc. about $50 range).

Thanks for any help!!
Patricia

The vent line runs along the left frame rail parallel to the main brake line. When I removed the "bladder" from my '75's fuel tank, I simply plugged the vent line and removed my canister. You do need to run a vented cap when doing this to let the pressure "breathe", as this is what the canister did.

REturn line runs with the fuel line. I wish I had left the vapor return line on mine. With the vented cap there is always a faint gas smell when you park it.

Paul, thanks for sharing how you handled your vent line and canister. I think I will do the same. It's interesting you removed the bladder from your tank. I've noticed the '74 tank is 18 gallons but my '75 is only 14 gallons: does that have to do with the bladder?

Mark, have you had any problems since you removed your return line? I've heard you can get vapor lock; is this the case?

If you think you will ever have the desire for Fuel Injection, go ahead and run an oversized return line now. (3/8" min) Also make sure the gas tank return nipple is inlarged to accomodate the 3/8" I.D.

Patricia, the bladders in "some" or "many" '75-'77(the same tank used these years)have started collapsing or shrinking, letting lesser amounts of fuel "fill" the tank. Since I took my bladder out of my '75's tank in '94, it takes 18gals easily when it's MTY, just like my '74.

Get your tank from Quantum Products. You get everything, sending unit o-ring, new locking ring, filler gasket and o-ring bolts. The tank itself is 100% correct also. Right around $200. You could probally get a tank from an 68 thru 73-4 (I don't know the first year the bladder was added) and it should work fine. If you are going to eliminate the vapor return system then get a tank that didn't use the vapor return system, example: 1970 LT-1 350.
