1980 Heads ?
I have a 1980 L-82 that I will be doing heads and an intake on next year and have done some digging around. Which size you use really depends on your goals. I have pretty much settled on the 64cc/180cc Dart Iron Eagles, but my goals are fairly modest. I'm just looking to give my car a little punch, not build a fire-breather. I'm no engine expert but my understanding is basically that a choice there will force other choices elsewhere. You give it a big combustion chamber like 72cc's with 200cc intake you better feed it with the right carb, better have a cam to take advantage of it, etc.
The other thing to consider in all this is that from what I've read the L-48 bottom end is not a great underpinning. My L-82 will reportedly support my modest goals with it's cam but building up the top of an L-48 without strengthening up the bottom is likely to lead to big problems.
Read, read, read and read some more. Search the heck out of the forum. I'm still reading and digesting and even though I have a rough plan I'm still many months away from even buying parts, let alone start getting my hands dirty. Good thing the research part is it's own kind of fun!
Good luck!
