Default Stupid SandBlasting Question.

Do you wear a dust mask when you sandblast. I bought a sandblasting cabinet for my restoration and started wondering?

Thanks,

Eddie

Because dust will always get through, unless you have a vacuum system hooked up. If any dust gets out wear a mask.

Mine occaisionally leaks a little, at the corners. I never felt the need for a dust mask, though...

All the cabinets I've looked at had a vacuum connection. Seems pretty easy to mod your cabinet to accept a vacuum connection.

I built my own blasting cabinet and use a shop vac to clear out the dust. Works well and I don't need a mask.

GaryS,
Do you have a problem with the media killing your Shopvac's filters? I also built my own cabinet, and since I started using the vac it now makes a higher pitch "whine". What media are you using? Do you have some sort of pre-filter? Thanks.

I'd wear a filter if any doubt about breathing dust in...

yes, i wear a mask and think i'm going to put my cabinet on a tool tray with wheels, take out the vacuum filter and "tube an air outlet out of pvc so it vents to the outside air unfiltered, and only use it outside... it creates a lot dust...

I am using this set up inside (no choice, cabinet is too big) and I am looking for a good way to eliminate dust without killing the shop vac. Perhaps a pre-filter? A dust collector would be nice, but they are big $$$ and take up a large amount of room. Any suggestions?

seriously i'm going to create an unrestriced air vent from PVC tubing to let any excess pressure go straight out side.... i have a huge dual stage aircompressor that puts out 17.5scfm at 125 psi and the sand blast cabinet is just exploding with pressure. i figure if i can let the pressure vent out side it will reduce the air pressure from coming out the sides... if you do this vent "uphill" you knows maybe even any large particles will roll back into the cabinet....

I use one every time. The cabinates need a vent to prevent presssure build up which in turn tends to blow the dust out. I made a filter to cover one vent & piped the other to a 5 gal bucket with a cover made from filter material also. It allows the unit to breath and at the same time traps the majority of the dust.

The reason for my question was because I noticed sand particles on top of the cabinet when I first used it. There’s a leak somewhere.

There is little documentation that came with the unit and no information about sandblasting on the Internet. I’ve also tried Borders for a book and found nothing.

I like to thank you all for your feedback and have one more question. I have my air regulator set at 90 psi but I notice bobs77vet‘s last reply. Maybe this is a question for bobs77vet, should I set the psi at max?

glad to here i'm not crazy... well i did buy a 77...but thats another story....

does yours have two vent holes, mine only has one, i'm thinking the air pressure should be enough to create air movement. what kind of filter do you use in the 5 gal bucket? and do you have an
"upside down u bend" in the pvc tubing almost like a reverse water trap to help reduce particulate flow. i was also thinking of leaving the cabinet inside on a bench and "piping it outside with no filter" maybe pipe it up into the rafters and then back down outside? what do you think?

The reason for the particles on the top of the cabinet is that there is a vent in the back. If you didn't relieve the pressure somehow, you'd pressurize the cabinet.

I've had my cabinet for years. From TP (aka TIP). Has a large vacuum device, about 3 1/2 feet tall. The particles fall down before going through the filter. I dump the residue.

My vacuum source is much bigger than any shop vac, and is designed as to not "suck" all the particles immediately through a paper or foam filter. I've never felt the need for a mask. Chuck

I'm not an expert on this my any means, i just use it aN awful lot...one of the reasons i supersized my compressor was to get the necessary SCFM and air pressure to use the sandblast cabinet. i usually run mine at 90-100 psi measured at the sand blast cabinet .... I also drilled 1/4 holes every 1/2 inch in the long pick up tube to assist in the siphon action....previously i had debris clogging the one open end....this seems to work great just have to move the gun around to make sure tube is always covered...

Mine ( Dayton Unit) has two holes one on the back right upper corner & one on the side that has a three sided cover on the inside ( Bottom is open). I took a pleated A/C filter & cut out the material I needed. Be carefull of the wire mesh inside No U bend just straight down from the vent on the side

Breathing in the dust from actual silica sand blasting media is not good for your lungs at all, and the glass/plastic beads can irritate your nose and throat when breathed in, go with a mask
