the saga of the explode-o-matic differential has drawn to a conclusion. thanks to the good fortune of knowing people here locally, i found a nice (who am i kidding?), well used '80 unit to transplant into the car. so i spent about 5 hours yesterday in reinstallation. while i was at it, i had the half shafts and drive shaft checked and balanced by a local shop so i would be pretty sure everything would be back in tip-top shape for the next track day.
i took extra pics and i'm going to see if either of the vette mags are intrested in a little 'how to' on the late c3 diff R&R proceedures.
i was hoping to notice at least a little performance gain as the '80 chunk had 3.08 gears where the original '81 chunk had 2.73. alas, i didn't notice any difference. in fact, the six week hibernation only pointed out just how loose the car is. after driving the '01, my '99 work truck and my g/f '03 tiburon, the c3 felt positively sloppy. i swear i felt like the entire car was held together with bailing wire and duct tape.
much more work to do!
