I live in the south, no salt or snow, I will be storing the car indoors and it will not be a daily driver. Should I just paint the frame? What is the advantage of using Por 15 versus regular paint? Thanks for the advice.
I PUT 2 COATS OF POR-15 AND A TOP COAT OF G.M. BLACK,,,THEN TOOK FRAME ,AND HAD IT Z BARTED TWICE-THE SECOND TIME WAS TO MAKE SURE IT WAS COVERED WHERE THE 1ST GUY MAY HAVE MISSED. DIRT WILL GET IN HOLES OF FRAME AND THEN WATER AND THESE FRAMES ARE KNOWN FOR ROT IN THE KICK UPS- ALSO I TOOK THE WINDSHIELD TRIM AND URATHENE SEALED THEN REPLACED TRIM. IT WAS DESIGNED FOR WATER / RAIN TO RUN UNDER AND CHANNEL DOWN THE POSTS TO THE WIPER WELL AND OUT TO THE GROUND,, CAUSING ROT IN THE POSTS ,,BY SEALING IT WATER IS NOW FORCED YO AND ARD THE TRIM-HERE'S SOME PHOTOS OF MT RESTORATION A FEW YRS AGO-------http://www.geocities.com/carlclub2/
Por-15 would protect the frame from any future rust. I live right on the Gulf Coast, and will be painting my frame with Por-15.
If you are going for NCRS judging, I think they will count off points if you do use anything other than what the factory used, which would eliminate the use of Por-15.
Por-15 is more expensive than just painting, but I think it would be a wise investment! Just my .02

when i was 16 years old some, 31 years ago i painted a model T truck which was my cousins with him...3 yrs ago he did another restoration on it...it sat outside for approx 20 yrs at his family farm in PA.... we used rustoleum red primer and rustoleum gloss black...nothing fancy and certainly not NCRS correct....when he went to sand blast the frame the rustoleum paint was still clinging to the frame and there was no rust...
i still usually use this paint for frames.... not correct, very inexpensive
and not fancy in any way... 1qt of rusty metal primer and 1qt of paint will cost about $11 bucks.... if you are going to show this in top flight shows don't use it. if you want something to be shiny go for it...thats what i'm doing....if you dont want it to be shiny use the satin black...

Mine is not a daily driver, never will see snow and rarely sees rain, but when I do my frame (the original covering is coming off) I am going with Por-15 just for the extra protection. If I'm going to do it I want to do it the best I can.
However, I am going to coat the Por-15 with authentic GM asphalt frame paint. I recently noticed Corvette Central sells it. That way I will have the best protection and the original look.
